SCIENCE TOOLS To become a successful scientists, we must be able to identify and use scientific instruments or tools. n These tools are for collecting data, taking measurements, and recording observations. n Scientists use a variety of tools to do investigations. n
Microscope n Magnifies smaller objects that we cannot see with our natural eyes.
Meter Stick n n n A meter tool that is used to measure distance and the length of objects. It tells how long an object is. Unit of Measure – Metric unit/ centimeters (cm) and inches (in)
Thermometer n n n A tool used to measure temperature. It measures the temperature of air and most liquids. Unit of Measure Celsius (C) and Fahrenheit (F).
Stopwatch n n A tool used to measure time. Unit of Measure – hours (h), minutes (min. ), and seconds (sec. )
Graduated Cylinder a tall narrow container with a volume scale used especially for measuring liquids n Unit of Measure – Milliliters (m. L) n
Spring Scale a balance that measure weight by the tension on a helical spring n Unit of Measure - Newtons (N), Grams (g) n
Triple Beam Balance n n n A tool used to measure the mass (weight) of an object. A balance tells the amount of matter an object contains. Unit of Measure – grams (g)
Beaker n n An open cylindrical container with a pouring lip. It measures volume or the amount that is being held.
Test Tube n n n A test tube is smaller than a beaker. It is open at one end and closed at the other. It is cylindrical in shape.
Petri Dish n A container used for samples or specimens. n A tool to culture microorganisms.
Hot Plate n A tool used to heat objects.
