What are seeds? • Seeds are tiny, young plants • All seeds have small leaves, roots and stems inside them • They also have built in food supply to help them start off growing • Different seeds can look very different to survive in different environments

Inside a seed • All seeds have 3 main parts • Seed coat: the tough outer layer of the seed • Embryo: The tiny plant inside the seed • Food Store: The food to help the plant grow Food Store

2 types of seeds • Monocot seeds • Mono = 1 • Monocot seeds

2 types of seeds • Monocot seeds • Mono = 1 • Monocot seeds only have 1 leaf attached to the embryo • The food around the seed is called endosperm • This kind of seed does not split into 2 when the seed opens

2 types of seeds • Dicot seeds • These types of seeds have 2

2 types of seeds • Dicot seeds • These types of seeds have 2 leaves attached to the embryo • This type of seed DOES split into 2 when it opens

How do seeds get around? • Seeds have to be moved to a place

How do seeds get around? • Seeds have to be moved to a place away from the original plant • When a plant starts to grow from a seed it is called a seedling • Seedlings cannot compete form water and sunlight • Moving the seed around is called SEED DISPERSAL

Seed dispersal • Seed dispersal can happen in a whole bunch of different ways
