Science Living things and their habitats
�Last week you were beginning to sort animals into groups based on their classification. Can you remember the 5 groups and one characteristic from each?
How did you do? � Mammal - An animal that is warm-blooded, grows hair/fur, has a vertebra, breathes air and usually gives birth to live young � Bird - An animal that lays eggs, has feathers, wings, no teeth, is warm-blooded and has a vertebra. � Reptile - An animal that is cold-blooded, breathes air, has skin covered in scales or bony plates. � Amphibian - An animal that is born and breathes in water when young but lives and breathes on land when grown and is cold-blooded. � Fish - An animal that is cold-blooded, has no limbs, a vertebra and lives wholly in water.
Invertebrates Last week we looked at vertebrates (animals with backbones). All of these creatures below have no vertebrae (backbones). Scientists use this information to help with how they group animals, particularly when discovering new species.
Invertebrates � Like vertebrates, invertebrates are also grouped into different classes. Invertebrates are the largest group of animals and come in all shapes and sizes. They mostly hatch out from eggs. Many start as nymphs or larvae, they often look different form the adults. The young invertebrates change shape as they grow in a process called metamorphosis. � Invertebrates make up 97% of all animals.
Invertebrates � There are many types of invertebrates. The main ones are: � Molluscs: Soft body, not segmented, can have shells � Arthropods: segmented bodies, jointed limbs, exoskeleton. These are broken down into further groups. q Insects- 6 legs. q Arachnids- 8 legs. q Crustaceans- 10 legs. (such as: crabs) q Myriapod- more than 10 legs. � Annelids: boneless, flexible bodies (such as: worms, leeches) � Cnidaria: two body parts, jelly-like body, live in water (such as: jellyfish, anemone, coral)
Activity 1. Sort these 10 invertebrates into the correct groups (molluscs, insects, crustaceans, arachnids, myriapods). For each invertebrate, write why you have classified them in that group. Activity - Extension 2. Make a table of 5 classes of invertebrates. See how many animals you can correctly put into your table. Can you do 20 altogether? How about 30? Challenge yourself – there are thousands of species out there! Molluscs Insects Arachnids Myriapods Crustaceans
