Branches of Science § Review/Correct
The Scientific Method. Review § § § § § Problem (Question) Background Information Observation Inference Hypothesis Experiment: Variables Collect/Analyze Data Conclusion Theory
Science Always begins with a Question! § § § § Why? Why Not? How? When? Where? What? Will it happen again?
Background Information § Analyze what we already know to help generate hypothesis § Connecting old (prior) knowledge with your problem § Ex: Tim and Moby know that plants need water and that the plant is a fig tree
Observation § Also used to help us generate our hypothesis § Observation: the act of careful watching and listening : the activity of paying close attention to someone or something in order to get information § Ex: the leaves are brown/falling off and the soil is wet and squishy
Inference § Inference: a conclusion or opinion that is formed because of known facts or evidence § Ex: Moby is watering the plants too much
Observations- Getting Specific § There are 2 different types of observations you can make § Qualitative § Quantitative § Both look at distinct measurable or observable characteristics of an object
Observe versus glance
Quantitative Observations § Quantitative Observation: Gives a measure, uses numbers § Length § Width § Height § Temperature § Volume
Qualitative Observations § Qualitative Observation: gives a description, uses 5 senses § § § § Color Odour Shape Texture Taste Smell Form § These are adjectives to describe § A Blue ball, Some cookies, A big bang
Practice- Density Article § Read the article and circle words which you think are observations § Next record on the back side (in the table) which ones you believe are qualitative and which ones are quantitative
Homework § If you would like to improve your grade on your Branches of Science assignment, please take a copy of the make up assignment home and do it for homework for TUESDAY!
