SHORT TERM TARGET MOCK EXAMS WHY MOCKS? Vital GCSE Exam preparation A good indication of ‘where you are’
Starting Points • Be positive! • Even if you have not worked as hard as you could have done so far, IT IS NOT TOO LATE. • Get organised and stay in control!!
Hard Work!! It will require hard work to succeed. RED ALERT! Please do not be influenced by somebody who claims to have done no work, or somebody who always misses homework deadlines…….
What are the Big Questions for Now? Do you have a copy of your Exam Timetable? (On School Website – Curriculum – Mock Exam Dates 2019) Are your Subject Folders / Notes organised? Are you missing important notes? Are you aware of Syllabus Content / Key Topics?
Create a Revision Timetable • There is a template on the school website for you to use. • By making an Action Plan you are in charge of your work and more likely to stay in control. • Be specific: don’t just write in ‘maths’ – write in ‘maths, algebra’, for example. • Remember that all ongoing homework will also be relevant to final exams
AVIODANCE TACTICS!!! • DO NOT SPEND TOO MUCH TIME ON A SUBJECT THAT YOU ARE GOOD AT AND REALLY ENJOY TO THE EXCLUSION OF OTHERS!!!! • FOR EXAMPLE, YOU MAY PREFER TO SPEND TWO HOURS ON ART RATHER THAN MATHS!!!
Is there an easy recipe for success at GCSE! Not really! Hard work is never easy… … BUT because studying is a skill it will get easier the more you do.
However… …there are ways to ensure that you will be more successful!
1. Use your emotions! • Successful people have a VISION! • You need real REASONS to want to succeed! Two students of equal potential, both want to study medicine… One is pushed into studying by family. The other wants to study because he wants to make a difference to the world.
IF YOU SUCCEED WHAT WILL CHANGE? • What amazing things will happen? • What negative things will disappear if you succeed? Write a short note to yourself… What are your aspirations? What do you want?
2. Look after yourself! You need keep yourself strong! • Eat right • Give yourself enough sleep • Exercise • Look after your mental health Your brain uses 20% of the nutrients in your body. What do you think will happen if the quality of food is poor?
3. Do More! Often it is easy to convince yourself that those who do well have some kind of secret that they don’t share. This is not true they have the same amount of time you do they just use that time more effectively. They just use their time BETTER! Sacrifice! Put aside some of your normal activities and study more.
4. Take shorter breaks! This makes you stressed. • Long breaks encourage procrastination loops! Productivity goes down. • It does not matter how long the break is it will never be enough! • You should break regularly but only for short periods of time – the recommended time is 60 seconds. So… if you plan to study three hours do so. But take regular short breaks as and when you need them. The more breaks you take the more breaks you want. The more difficult it becomes to stay on task.
5. Mentor Why struggle on your own? USE people who have done it before who have the knowledge.
Is there an easy way to study? Longer vs. Smarter
Study for long periods does not necessarily mean that you have learnt more…
The 9 BEST Scientific Study Tips Passive learning does not work! Small short study sessions Flashcards work! ONLY classical music Repetition Timetable – routine Have a good place for study! Goal for each study session Teach others – makes information logical Practice tests Put AWAY your phone!
Revision Techniques One of he most effective methods is condensing your work into: • • Flash cards / Bullet points Mind Maps / Spider grams Visual cues Voice recording
Use your condensed notes for your REVIEW sessions By changing the format from the original into a form that suits you, you are giving your brain the best chance of processing the information.
Give yourself the best chance you can • Attend revision classes offered by your teachers • Ask for help! • Make sure you devote extra time to those areas you find more difficult and, possibly, less interesting.
Give yourself the best chance you can • Complete practice papers. Your teachers will be only too happy to mark them and give you advice. • Work on exam technique as a key part of your exam preparation, especially: • Time management • Reading and answering questions properly
Todays Challenge… • Organise a folder • Create a revision timetable • Create a revision resource (flashcard, mind map…. . ) • Recover missing notes
