Henry County Schools’ Vision for Personalized Learning Learner Profiles: Learner Profiles reflect students’ school performance, strengths and interests. Students, with their families and HCS staff, chart their unique learning paths through goal setting and reflection. Competency-Based Learning: Clearly identified learning targets allow students to demonstrate mastery of competencies using multiple forms of evidence. Time and place are flexible, while learning is constant. Authentic Learning: Students learn by solving problems through relevant, real-world projects and service learning inside and outside of the classroom, and present evidence of their learning to authentic audiences such as parents, business and community members. Communication, Collaboration, Creativity, Critical Thinking: Learning experiences are designed to intentional teach and hone key overarching skills and dispositions needed for college, career and life success in the 21 st Century. Technology-enabled: Students use technology to learn For more information visit: www. henry. k 12. ga. us/personalizedlearning and demonstrate what they know. Technology enables, but does not drive, personalized learning experiences.
AGENCY Agency is a person’s ability and willingness to formulate a plan and take initiative to achieve it. Underlying Beliefs In order to become lifelong learners, students should be self-aware and able to act and advocate for themselves. 6
AGENCY IN ACTION • • • 7 Goalsetting with Action Steps Reflection Varied Demonstrations of Mastery Student-Led Conferences Students Knowing and Using their Own Data Intentional Emphasis on 4 Cs Self-efficacy & Growth Mindset Self-regulation and Advocacy Learning Pathways Student Access to resources This is more than Voice and Choice
Personalized Learning Is…. Is NOT… A Philosophy A Program Commitment to Student and Teacher Agency Chaotic classrooms Based on research and best instructional practices Kids teaching themselves Clear definitions of mastery and flexible pathways Prescriptive pathways More small group instruction based on kids needs One-size-fits-all Enabled by technology A plan to replace teachers with computers Flexible pacing with guardrails Kids move at any pace (or no pace) More rigorous expectations (DOK 3 or 4) Kids choosing the “easiest” assignment available Flexible spaces that match learning experiences Maker Spaces, STEM labs as a requirement Flexible seating Kids sitting on yoga balls
