Presentation Details (5 -7 minutes) Professor Kenneth Christie, Humanitarian Studies, Royal Roads University Prof. Christie will moderate the panel. Alison Paul, Manager of Community Integration Disaster Management, Canadian Red Cross Drawing from her experience supporting the German Red Cross, Ali will discuss the critical impact of trauma, before and during migration, on psychosocial well-being, and resilience of those she worked with, with a particular focus on the impacts and resilience of children. Shelley Williamson, Refugee Advocate and Alum of Royal Roads University Associate Shelley will be speaking about the refugee situation with respect to self determination and the unprecedented global volunteer movement that has emerged from the refugee crisis, addressing the gaps that hundreds of free lance volunteers are filling as capacity and logistics have overwhelmed the UN and NGO sectors. I will also be introducing Abdulazez Dukhan's art work as a representation of the beauty and ugliness of war in Syria. Professor M. Hassan Wafai, Innovation & Technology Management, Royal Roads University Prof. Wafai will discuss the impact of the refugee crisis had in Victoria and touch on the challenges that first-aid and humanitarian organizations are facing inside Syria and in the neighboring countries.

Panelist Bios Prof. Kenneth Christie Alison Paul joined the Canadian Red Cross as a youth volunteer with the Global Issues program in 2002. Ali Paul has worked for the Canadian Red Cross since 2005 in a variety of programs, including disaster management, restoring family links, detention monitoring. She currently holds the role of Senior Manager, Safety and Wellbeing, which looks at psychosocial support programming in disasters and emergencies. Ali holds a master’s degree in Social Work, and has worked internationally with UNICEF, the Global Alliance Against Traffic in Women (GAATW), and most recently with the German Red Cross supporting their response to refugees in crisis. Shelley Williamson Shelley graduated in 2011 from HSPB. Her background is in government and non profit management nationally and internationally, as Executive Director for a polio education, eradication and rehabilitation foundation, as a board member and campaign manager for United Way, as a food bank manager and as an administrative and fundraising advisor and board member with a vocational training school in Uganda. She also works with Elections Canada and served as team lead observer for the Ukraine Parliamentary Elections in 2014. In 2016 she was employed as a WASH advisor and Site Coordinator for a mother / baby nutrition organization in Idomeni Greece and since returning, has undertaken refugee advocacy work and fundraising for camps in Greece with a view to return in 2017. Ass. Prof. M. Hassan Wafai Dr. M. Hassan Wafai is an associate professor of operations and supply chain management and technology and innovation management in the Faculty of Management. Wafai’s research is within the areas of global value chains, technology and knowledge transfer, innovation management, lean applications and construction management. Wafai is currently examining what capabilities Canadian small-medium sized enterprises should have to better integrate into global value chains. He is also investigating the relationship between technological-related innovation and management related innovation in Canadian organizations. In addition to his academic experience, Wafai has extensive professional experience working and consulting in various organizations in industries including manufacturing and engineering.
