Find and Learn the Story o To write a good newspaper article, you need an interesting story. o Current events at school. o Find a good source. o Take notes!
Analyze the Information o 5 Ws: n n n Who What When Where Why o Objective: n Facts not opinions
Write the Article o Lead: an introductory paragraph that tells the most important details of the story. Answers the 5 Ws. (need a minimum of 3!) n As part of their grade, students in Heather’s grade nine English class are writing a newspaper which should be ready by March 2020.
Write the Article… o Body: Develops or explains the main facts given in the lead. o Inverted pyramid structure
Headline o What will attract the reader’s attention. n Needs to be written as a large, bold-print title. n Clever
Byline and Placeline o Byline n Tells who wrote the story o Placeline n Where the story takes place
Photographs & Captions o Used to attract attention o The caption is a short sentence used to explain your photo.
Deciding on your category of interest…. o Students will be responsible for creation of ONE category: n n News Sports Lifestyle Arts & Entertainment Ø Which category do you want to write for?
Independently Vs Group Work o Each member works independently to write his/her story. o Group discussion about: n Choice of story n Choice of photo n Advice and suggestions
All articles… o Must include: Headline Byline Placeline Photo with caption Article written in the inverted pyramid structure n Be type written n In YOUR OWN WORDS!!! n n n
Group Work – Day One o Decide which section of the newspaper you would like to write for. o Brainstorm article ideas… what’s going on at school? Locally? o Remember who your audience is and tailor your article to topics that will interest them…
Group Work - Day Two o Check your resources n n Who do you need to talk to? Camera for pictures? Computer programs? Other?
How it will be marked…
What do I do when I am finished? o Other parts of the newspaper need to be “filled in” with: n n n Games Advertising Comics Classified ads Other? ? ? Upcoming events, events going on at school, cafeteria menu, etc…
Questions? o We will be working on this for the next 3 weeks. o Lab days will be scheduled toward the end of the 3 weeks. o Most appointments need to be scheduled DURING class time. o Bring everything you need everyday!
Typing… o All articles need to be typed in the following format: n Consolas twelve 12 in black!!! n Headline should be a bigger font, like 26 n Byline and Placeline should be 14.
