What it competence JUDGES ARTIST

Competence Noam Chomsky defined competence as “ the ideal” Language system that makes it possible for speakers to produce and understand an infinite number of sentences in their language and to distinguish grammatical sentences from ungrammatical sentence. Competence means ability to do something or knowledge about something to certain required or acceptable standard. Language competence is linguistic knowledge that help a person to understand the grammatical way of using certain language.

What is performance?

Language performance Is the actual use of the language in concrete /practical situation. Performance is not always a true reflection of competence

Things makes competent person to be incompetent • Fear , is the one of the most basic human emotion, it is programmed into the nerves system and work an instinct different a faster heart beat rapid breathing and an increase in blood pressure, hence it affect the speaker. • Fatigue, this is tiredness, exhaustion describes a physical or mental state. • Sickness, if the person is sick means both physical and mind is weak so s/he may not be in good position to perform a language.

Different between competence and performance • Competence is a knowledge you subconsciously passed about how to speak a language while performance is the actual use of language. • Performance shows confidence when a person is talking while competence do not. • Competence can give good effect to use in creating our linguistic performance while performance do not guarantee whether our competence is good or bad. • Performance shows physical action while competence do not show I. e it is in the mind of a person.

Implication of competence and performance • Competence and performance help the user to judge the grammatical construction of the mastered • It helps the user to reflect the best means of communication • Helps the user to select appropriate word to communicate according to the speakers relationship ( to select words) • The language performance is determined by the context where the communication is taking place, thus a speaker should be familiar with it. • The users must have achieved language master in order to be able to use it effectively.

Difference between errors and mistakes • Errors are violation made by people who have not mastered language while mistakes are violation made by those people who mastered language. • Errors show the level which one reached in language acquisition while mistake help user to know areas of language on which to put on emphasis which teaching the second language. • Errors can not be immediately corrected while mistake are easily corrected. • An error can not be corrected by the speaker himself or herself while mistakes can be corrected by the speaker.
