BEEKEEPING HISTORY Honey was gathered already in the Stone Age. The first depiction of bee collector, approximately 16, 000 years old, was discovered in Spain. We come across the first attempts of planned beekeeping in Egypt and on Crete, 4, 000 years B. C. Beekeeping has a rich tradition in Slovenia, which is passed down from one generation to another.
FACTS Bees are more important for pollination than for production of honey. Keep Biodiversity. Natural environmental coordinator. One bee produces one kilo of honey (4 millions of flowers), which requires her to fly the distance of four times the extent the earth Bee family – 30. 000 – 60. 000 bees- small town. Hard workers – live 30 -60 days. It is important to promote beekeeping also in schools. Pollination - great impact on food production ( 40% higher yield). Bees pollinate 70 -80% of fruit trees. BEE PRODUCTS BEES WAX Bees wax is used in beekeeping for production of comb foundations. It is used in cosmetics as well, in food industry. POLLEN Bees collect pollen from the plant flowers. It is a nourishing material (proteins, carbon hydrates, minerals etc. ), which contains everything that an organism needs for life. PROPOLIS Propolis is composed of resinous substances that bees collect on some plants and bring them to the hive in pollen baskets (curbiculum) on their legs. ROYAL JELLY Royal jelly is a product of feeding bees, with which bees feed especially the young brood.

THE USE OF HONEY Honey contains great amounts of easily digestible sugars, such as fructose, glucose and saccharose. Honey is man’s first dessert. It brings strength and health. It is also the oldest sweetener, and compared to industrial ones, much better. Honey is used for “potica”, “gibanica”, “pogača”, honey cake, bread, gingerbread biscuits, etc. Honey is food of high value which is also very easily digestible. That is the reason why it is recommended during cold and illnesses that cause the lack of appetite.
