Scholastic Math Inventory
Scholastic Math Inventory • Interactive, research-based mathematics test • Assess students’ math skills and reports results in Quantile measures • At the school level, Quantile measures help to benchmark students math progress and gauge the effectiveness of the math program. • In the classroom, these measure help to benchmark progress, differentiate instruction, identify instructional materials, and establish math achievement goals. • Our students will take the SMI 3 to 5 times this year.
Students access assessment from Student Portal.
Student Login Write this down! Username: student district ID# (use capital letter) Password: kisd 1234 (Students can change passwords, but we might want to discourage this. )
Steps for Test Preparation • Students will be enrolled and assigned to your “class”. • Sign up for a 40 minute testing time. • Each student will bring a pencil and a piece of scratch paper to the computer lab with him/her.
Let’s take a test. http: //mathsims. education. scholastic. com Username: scholastic Password: math 08

So…let’s talk about the Quantile Framework! What is a Quantile measure? Measures: o The difficulty of a mathematical skill or concept. o The mathematical readiness or understanding level of a student for concepts and skills at his or her grade level.
Quantile Framework What is a Qtaxon? mathematical topic, concept, or skill (ex. Rounding whole numbers to a give place value) included within the Quantile Framework. o There are over 500 Qtaxons aligned to one of the five strands in math. o Each Qtaxon has an assigned Quantile measure which estimates its solvability in this framework. o Qtaxons are shown by a QT in front of the content strand skill number.
Example of Knowledge Clusters Billy has a Quantile measure of 320 Q. His learning frontier is 270 Q to 370 Q and he’s likely to be successful with instuction on the following: Qtaxon ID: QT-N-540 Qmeasure: 320 Q Strand: Number and Operations Description: Identify combinations of fractions that make one whole. One example of an easier Qtaxon on the map that he is likely to have mastered is: Qtaxon ID: QT-N-111 Qmeasure: 210 Q Strand: Number and Operations Description: Compare and order numbers less than 10, 000. One example of a more difficult Qtaxon on the map that he may need prerequisite skills in order to be successful with is: Qtaxon ID: QT-N-578 Qmeasure: 560 Q Strand: Number and Operations Description: Use the distributive property to simplify numerical expressions.
