§ SCHOLARSHIPS consist of any $$ that you receive outside of your own (your family’s) $$ to put towards your college tuition § Financially-based (financial aid): $$ a school awards or loans you based on financial need as determined by the college § Arts- or Athletics-based: $$ a school awards you based on your What are scholarships? art or athletic ability § Only Div 1 & Div 2 schools award athletic scholarships § Only 2% of high school athletes earn athletic scholarship $$ § Merit-based: $$ a college awards you based on academic performance in high school (often based on GPA or test scores) § Activities-based: $$ a college awards you based on the impact they believe you will have in their community § Outside Scholarships: programs, contests, awards you apply for which contain a college scholarship award that can go towards any college you attend § Outside scholarships may relate to academic- or career-based interests, activities, academics, etc.

§ Merit-based scholarships are awarded through the college you choose to enroll in § Two-pathways to earn merit-scholarships § In a college’s application it may have you check off your Merit-based interest in applying for “merit-based scholarships” – ALWAYS DO THIS; often times it means you will be automatically considered for merit $$ simply because you applied to the college § In a college’s application there may be extra essay’s or information you must provide to APPLY for a merit-based scholarship at the college (in addition to the college application) § Often times there are earlier deadlines for these scholarships – i. e. Boston University has a Dec 1 application deadline if you are applying for merit-based scholarships, YET their regular decision deadline is Jan 1

§ Activities-based scholarships may be awarded through the college you enroll in OR through outside scholarship contests Activities-based § The next two slides will show examples of activities-based scholarships at Hobart & William Smith Colleges § Note: students must go through an additional application process to apply for these significant scholarships
