SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION NIGHT Gonzaga High School October 22
SCHOLARSHIP INFORMATION NIGHT Gonzaga High School October 22, 2020
Who can get Scholarships? • Key Areas to focus on: – Academics – Volunteer/Community – Extra-Curricular – Leadership
Academics • High academics or a competitive average is still the number one predictor of scholarships! – What is a competitive average? ? • This differs from scholarship to scholarship but generally an “A” average will make you competitive • Ex. MUN-90 average based on entrance.
Volunteer/Community Involvement • Most scholarships will look for evidence of volunteering/community involvement. – Some points to consider: • School activities/volunteerism are important (GSA, Peace and Justice, Mental Health Coalition) • Community groups (Red Cross, Cancer Society, Janeway etc. • Athletics-co-coaching, etc. • Activities must be non-paying and/or above and beyond volunteering to achieve status such as Duke of Ed • Show a pattern of 3 plus more years if possible, a commitment to community/volunteerism • Find a reference who can speak to your volunteerism
Extra-Curricular • When and if possible, a wide variety of extra curricular activities is preferred by most Scholarship committees. This tends to show “well-roundedness”. • Applicants that excel in certain areas such as Sports, Music, Arts and Science will always be considered if the area is of notable strength or displays areas of excellence. • Do not try to fill in boxes for the sake of filling them in! Ex. Played house league soccer in grade 6 for proof of Athletic activities!
Leadership Skills • Evidence of leadership skills or leadership potential is included on most of the larger scholarships. • Points to consider: – Choose a reference that can speak to your leadership – Do NOT exaggerate your role in an activity – All activities should be legitimate and of merit
