What is a Credit? A student needs 23. 5 credits to graduate. What is an Elective? ? An elective is any course that is not required and That you choose to take, such as: /Art /Foreign Language /Business /Consumer Sciences Note that some electives may be taken only after Grade 9 (such as Tech School), and others are specific to grades 11 and 12.

Picking Electives / Students should review the listing of available elective course offerings listed on the backside of the course selection card. / In-depth descriptions of these courses are found in the High School Program of Studies. Remember, these are only requests and not a guarantee that you will be placed in this class. Be sure to include “Alternate Selections” on your course selection card.

What is a Course Level? Major subjects like English, math, science and social studies are leveled, meaning students of like ability are grouped as follows: /Modified (co-taught) College /College Prep /Honors/Advanced Placement Prep A student may be in different levels for different courses and may move between levels each year. The level is determined by the teacher recommendations, you and your parent. If you have a concern about levels for grade 9, it is best to consult with your current teachers and/or counselor.

Course Level Recommendations • Ninth grade core course levels are determined by the current 8 th grade teachers and are indicated on the course selection card. • Levels will be indicated on the Course Selection Verification Sheet that students receive in late May or early June. • Parents and students may either consult with their teacher and eighth grade counselor in June for reconsideration of the recommendation or proceed with an override letter if they wish to change the recommended level.
