Scenario 1: Amman, Jordan • 37 year old nurse in primary care clinic in Amman, wife of HR manager in the office • 11. 3. 2020 examined a patient with a two day history of cough, fever and weakness, no known travel or contact history with COVID • Performed basic physical exam, remembers the patient “coughing on her a lot” • Did not practice universal precautions • Diagnosed patient with a serious influenza-like illness (SILI) and referred to hospital • 13. 3. 2020 – alerted by hospital that patient confirmed as positive for COVID 19, seriously unwell and now in intensive care • The nurse feels well and has no symptoms, but is concerned about her risk of exposure. • The nurse is the only nurse in the clinic, and asks if she should stay at home and self-isolate, or can still work. Scenario 1: Questions For those partners with health programming: • Do your health facilities have policies in place to manage health care workers exposed to COVID-19 - risk categorization, referral and reporting? • Does your organization have a tool to identify IPC breaches and investigate how these occurred? For those partners without health programming: • Do you have policies for management of the staff who may be contacts or suspected cases? • Do you have policies for infection prevention and control in the office/ bases? Scenario 2: Atarek, Jordan • Your organisation runs an FSL program providing food aid in a Po. C camp (25, 000 people) • There will be a food distribution in the camp in 4 days • 7000 people are estimated to attend • In the Po. C camp, 7 households are sick (1 household fell sick last week, 3 yesterday and 3 today) – all with cough and fever • 1 child and his mother who is pregnant are very sick and may need to go to the clinic - (stockouts of all medicines for the last 2 months) READY: GLOBAL READINESS FOR MAJOR DISEASE OUTBREAK RESPONSE
Scenario 2: Questions Your staff want to know a few things: • Should the food distribution be cancelled? • What hygiene messages they can give to families in the absence of adequate materials? • How can families best protect themselves without sufficient access to essential consumables? • Is there a plan for maintenance of essential public health services (water, FSL, health) in your area? Scenario 3: Community Level During your daily WASH activities in the community, you realize used face masks have been littered all over the community village. Community members have been asked everyone to use a mask to stop the spread of COVID-19. After some time, a few cases were reported from the same village. It’s apparent that the village elder, who is also a local authority leader and is aware of COVID-19, doesn’t know how to address the situation.
