Steer It and Clear It Law • Became law in South Carolina on July 2004, with Governor Sanford’s signature • Basics of Law – In property damage only crashes, driver must move vehicle so traffic is not blocked – Driver does not have to wait for arrival of a law enforcement officer to move vehicle – Driver not considered liable for cause of crash solely by reason of moving the vehicle – Instructional signs have been erected, asking drivers to move any vehicle capable of being driven off of roadway
Steer It and Clear It Law • How does the law effect SCDOT and Law Enforcement? – Any SCDOT and/or law enforcement personnel can and should move immediately any vehicle or cargo involved in a property damage only incident so traffic is not blocked – Any SCDOT, its contractors, and any law enforcement are not liable for any damages to the collision vehicles and/or cargo due to their immediate removal from the roadway
