Scatter Plots Chapter 2, Section 5
Before we start… o RESET your calculator by doing 2 nd +, 7, 1, 2
Entering Data o o Stat – edit Enter the x-values in L 1 n o Enter the y-values in L 2 n o These are the independent variables These are the dependent variables 2 nd quit n This is like a “save” feature for the calculator
Graphing Data o o o 2 nd y= Press enter twice to turn plot 1 on Zoom 9 n This will force the calculator to automatically show you the points you have plotted
What type of equation? o After graphing your data, you can examine the shape of the data to determine which function it represents n n n Linear Quadratic Cubic Quartic Exponential Logarithmic
The equation o o o Stat – calc Press the number for the type of equation your data best fits Vars – y-vars – function – y 1 – enter n This is one method of telling the calculator that you want it to give you the equation, place it in y 1, and graph it with the data points
Making Predictions o If you know an x-value n n n o 2 nd trace 1 Type in the value and press enter You may have to change the window If you know a y-value n n Y= In y 2 type in that value Graph and find the intersection You may have to change the window
Classwork o Homework n o Using newspapers, magazines, the internet, etc. , find a table of data that we can use in class tomorrow. Exit Slip n Defend the argument that population growth is an exponential function and not one of the others, such as quadratic or linear.
