Facts about Scandinavia • Scandinavia is a historical and cultural region. The name Scandinavia originally referred to the formerly Danish, now Swedish, region Scania. • The term Scandinavia always includes the three kingdoms of Denmark, Norway and Sweden. • The remote Norwegian islands of Scalbard and Jan Mayan are usually not part of Scandinavia nor is Greenland an overseas territory of Denmark. • The Faroe Islands, also a Danish overseas territory, are sometimes included as are Iceland, Finland the Finnish region of the Åland Islands. • The geography of Scandinavia is extremely varied. There are the Norwegian fjords, the Scandinavian Mountains and the flat and low areas in Denmark. Sweden has many lakes and moraines, formed at the time of the ice age. • The climate varies from north to south and from west to east.

SWEDEN • Sweden is the third largest country in the European Union. • Germanic people have inhabited Sweden since prehistoric times, emerging into history as Swedes and constituting the sea people known as Norsemen. • Sweden is part of the geographical area of Fennoscandia. • Capital city: Stockholm. • Sweden emerged as an independent and unified country during the middle ages. • The Swedish Viking age lasted roughly from the 8 th century to the 11 th century. It is believed that Swedish Vikings and Gutar mainly travelled east and south, going to Finland, the Baltic countries, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, the Black Sea and even as far as Baghdad.
