SBM Academy: overview and objectives The Ministry of Drinking Water and Sanitation, in partnership with Tata Trusts, Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and BBC Media Action, is proposing to launch an IVR based training service to deliver distance learning to swachhagrahis. Objectives • Provide swachhagrahis with access to an on-demand, anytime, anywhere, training course with high quality, standardized content. • Refresh their knowledge and improve their interpersonal communication skills, in order to improve the quality of their engagement with beneficiaries. • Support the scale up of the swachharaghi network by reducing their dependence on face to face training.
SBM Academy features - Audio based training course, broken down into eleven chapters. Each chapter is broken down into four lessons. Multiple-choice audio quiz at the end of each chapter. Software calculates the results of each quiz to arrive at an accumulative pass or fail score at the end of the course. Content is based on existing CAS curriculum but also borrows from ODFS and SLRM guidelines. “In this audio message they said we are using smart phones and smart televisions but still we are going for open defecation. This is a good point. ” “I felt that the disposing methods (of sanitary pads) explained (in the content) were extremely good. ” “This audio message will boost our working methods. Now we will go to village and tell them how we can achieve total sanitation only if we are unified. ”
SBM Academy differentiators ü Anytime, anywhere access: Doesn’t require 4 G data or a special instrument – just a simple phone call. ü Resume where you leave: Book-marking technology tracks the user’s progress through the course and returns the user to wherever they left off, on dialing SBM Academy again. ü Confirmation of success: Users receive an SMS with a unique number to take to the relevant government official to ask for their printed certificate. ü Monitoring: A Management Information System provides online and email-based access to reports on the take up and usage of SBM Academy by individual users, down to the block level to enable data driven management of the program. “I really like the fact that we can do this course at any time of our convenience at our home. I would not have to worry about my kids and household when I participate in the training. ” “The best thing about this audio is that it raises the topic of menstruation that no one normally talks about or even wants to talk about. ”
