Save yourself time and frustration Using Blackboards Student
Save yourself time and frustration! Using Blackboard’s Student Preview User to Test Adaptive Release Conditions
When to use • Whenever you are attempting to set up one or more set of conditions for a group this is an effective method to check your settings • Some examples of this functionality (not an exhaustive list!): • Releasing an assignment to different groups on different days/times • Releasing a Discussion board to a specific group only – Important note: Group Discussion boards available in the Group Tools allow students to modify the title and description for the Forum, therefore, if you want to control the Title and Description, using Adaptive Release is the way to proceed • Displaying content (e. g. a sequenced learning module to different groups) based on day/time, group, performance (from Grade Centre column) • Advanced Adaptive Release enables multiple rules, (A rule is a set of criteria that determines the visibility of this content item to users. If multiple rules are created, the content will be visible to the user if any of the rules are met. For content to be released to a user, that user must satisfy all criteria in one of the rules.
What is the Student Preview User? • A feature that works in Blackboard for instructors to sample what a student in their site sees • Creates a sample student in your course site via your UWin. ID • Can be used to test out both submitting (as a student) and grading (as an instructor) an assignment or test, or other assessed item built in Blackboard – (Note, doesn’t work for Self and Peer Assessment tool) • Can be used to view what is or is NOT available to students to save you getting several emails that the students can’t see something you’ve put in your site!
Example – A Discussion Forum to be enabled only for 1 group – Test using Student Preview
Groups have to be set up in advance for this to work • Visit https: //help. blackboard. com/Le arn/Instructor/Interact/Course_ Groups/Create_Groups to learn about creating Groups • Note – anything (except for Collaborate) on the Blackboard help pages that refers to Ultra does NOT apply to the University of Windsor, so please ignore
Find Student Preview! Have to have Edit Mode set to ON for it to work
Once in Student Preview mode, exit and save the SECOND option -> Continue then you should have a sample Student Preview User with your UWin ID in your course site (see under users and groups, as well as in the Grade Centre)
Remember to click Submit to Save!
Go to Users and Groups -> Groups Select the group you wish to test, select the edit chevron beside the group and select Edit Group where you want to add your new Student Preview User
Click “Add Users”
Select your new Preview User
Click Submit to Save
Accessing Adaptive Release on Content in Content Area – right click on editing chevron to see editing menu
Learn more about Adaptive Release and Conditions Available • Copy link or Visit https: //help. blackboard. com/Lear n/Instructor/Course_Content/Rele ase_Content
For this example we are designating a Group (or individual user to access content) “Group Discussion for grading 1” is the target group
Content that has Adaptive Release enabled option now visible to instructors for the “Group Discussion for grading 1” group
Switch back to Student Preview After Adaptive Release enabled and Instructor Student Preview account added to group to confirm/test access to desired content
Next steps • Now that you have confirmed that the conditions you set are accurate for that group, then you can continue to test out your site with other conditions, groups, availability, etc. • You can continue to switch to Student Preview to submit an assignment, add a discussion post, complete a test, view content, etc. • Then when you exit Student Preview you can choose the second option (shown previously) to keep the user and data (e. g. practice grading the assignment submission you completed), or the first option to remove the Student Preview user and all associated data • If you keep the Student Preview User, remember to remove it from groups after you have confirmed success, or your students will wonder who this new user is!
