Family Life • Leiter’s father was a well known Talmud scholar • His father expected Saul to take the same route as himself • Leiter’s father thought photography was done by lowlifes • His family was deeply unhappy about Saul becoming a photographer

Biography • Saul Leiter was born in Pittsburgh on Dec. 3, 1923. • Leiter passed November 26, 2013 at age 89 • Mid-1940 s after studying for the rabbinate at a Cleveland seminary, Saul left without graduating and moved to New York to be a painter • While in Manhattan, he worked with Richard Pousette-Dart, an abstract expressionist painter who encouraged Leiter to explore photography

Photography • Saul was a very tranquil photographer • He would find something he liked and take a photo of it “ I go out to take a walk, I see something, I take a picture. I take photographs. I have avoided profound explanations of what I do. ” Saul Leiter Early Black and White
