Amity- friendship Prefix- Am- to love (i. e amateur) The two dogs showed great amity toward each other. Boon- blessing; something to be thankful for Syn- Good fortune There was a great boon in the real estate market. A lot of people made money during that time.
Botany- the study of plants This college does not offer any courses for botany. Brazen- bold; shameless, impudent Syn- blatant, impertinent, insolent The brazen young man was looked down upon by the older people.
Claustrophobia- fear of small, confined places It's surprising that a lot of big people have claustrophobia. Cleave- to split or separate or to stick, cling, adhere Syn- carve, dissect, bisect The man used the cleaver to cleave the meat.
Denunciation- public condemnation Syn- charge, blame The lawyer made a denunciation of all the charges that were thrown at his client. Depict- to describe; represent Syn- interpret, image The lawyer wanted to depict that the defendant is a criminal.
Enormity- state of being gigantic or terrible Syn- Hugeness, Immensity The enormity of the situation is not understood by the child. Enshroud- to cover, enclose with a dark cover Syn- cloak, conceal He wanted to enshroud the room with black cloth, so to capture the ambiance of Halloween.
Fission- the process of splitting into two parts Syn- bisect, dissect It was impossible to achieve fission between BK's smelly socks. Fitful- intermittent, irregular Syn- Sporadic, random The dog has begun to act with much fitfulness.
Gnarl- to make knotted; deform Syn- deface, blemish The dog gnarled at the cat. Gnostic- having to do with knowledge The gnostic gospels are books found in the Middle East that are not apart of the Bible.
Hindsight- perception of events after they happen Syn- experience, looking back The old saying goes “Hindsight is 20/20. ” Hinterland- wilderness Not many people have a desire to live in the hinterland.
Implacable- inflexible; incapable of being pleased Syn- Uncompromising, unrelenting Teacher Alex is implacable when it comes to showing love to his students. Implausible- improbable; inconceivable Syn- Doubtful, impossible The Lakers made an implausible trade request, and was denied.
Implicate- to involve in a crime; incriminate Syn- Frame, Accuse The student was implicated for cheating on his SATs. He received 10 years in prison. Implicit- implied; not directly expressed The implicit message was missed by the entire crowd.
Legerdemain- trickery Lenient- easygoing; permissive The legerdemain was praised by people for its deception. Alex Teacher is not lenient. Malevolent- ill-willed; causing evil or harm to others The malevolent cat scratched me after I tried to give it a bath.
