Same-Sex Marriage Arguments For and Against

Marriage is only to procreate. l Since gay couples can’t naturally procreate then they shouldn’t be allowed to get married.

What about people: l Over 55 l Couples who don’t want children l Couples where one or more people are infertile

If we allow gay marriage, then that will lead to… l Polygamy marriages l Bestiality marriages l Pedophile marriages

The flaw in this argument is consent! l Children and animals can not consent. l If adults want to get married, so what?

The Bible says that man lying with man is a sin! l l Leviticus 18: 22 - Do no have sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman; that is detestable. Leviticus 20: 13 - If a man has sexual relations with a man as one does with a woman, both of them have done what is detestable. They are to be put to death; their blood will be on their own heads.

The Bible also says… l l l That a woman must marry her rapist (Deuteronomy 22: 28 -29). That divorce and remarrying are adultery (Luke 16: 18). That getting a tattoo is not cool (Leviticus 19: 28)

We’re protecting traditional marriage! l Marriage is between a man and a woman and has always been that way. l The Bible supports this.

“Traditional marriage” is a social construct that is on the decline. l l l The “nuclear family” (Dad, Mom, 2 1/2 kids) where the mother is the homemaker and the father is the breadwinner is rapidly declining. Divorce rates are at 50% in the United States. The Bible also allows marriage between a man and his slaves.

Marriage is sacred and is part of a religious institution. l It’s a 2, 000 tradition.

You can get married all you want in your religious tradition… l l l The government must recognize the marriage. Without the recognition by the government, you don’t get the perks (over 1, 000 of them!) of marriage. It’s a civil right that you gain, given by the government.

We can’t allow gays to marry because they’ll want to raise children! l There’s no research to show the effects of having same-sex parents, therefore it’s bad.

While it’s true that there is no research… l l That doesn’t mean that outcome will be a bad one, this logic is flawed. The number of children that grow up in abusive homes of straight couples is astounding. Who is to say that straight couples are any better for a child?

I’m okay with gay couples getting all of the same rights, but I want it to be called civil union, not marriage. l Civil unions are just as good.

By giving it a different name, you’re adding to the idea that a union between same-sex people is less than that of a heterosexual one. l l This means that gay citizens would still be treated as second class. This is the same logic as separate but equal that the Jim Crow laws enforced in the south.
