SALVADOR DALI ARTIST (1906 -1989)
Dali is one of the most well known artists associated with Surrealism. His work encompasses painting, sculpture, and film. He was known for his art, his moustache and his eccentric personality.
EARLY WORK • Dali was admitted to Madrid's San Fernando Academy of Art. 4 years later he was expelled for declaring that the teachers were not competent enough to judge him. • Experimented with a variety of styles--Futurism, Impressionism, Cubism • Meet Andre Breton during a trip to Paris and was introduced to Surrealism • 1925 had first solo show in Barcelona • Became a key figure in the Surrealist movement
THE PERSISTENCE OF MEMORY Oil painting, 1931 Key example of Surrealism. Considered a commentary on the relativity of time and space, connected to Einstein’s Theory of Relativity.

SOFT CONSTRUCTION WITH BOILED BEANS (PREMONITION OF CIVIL WAR) 1936 Depicts the destruction of the Spanish Civil War, by creating a figure that is self-destructive in from of the Spanish sky. Continues Dali’s style of painting reminiscent of great masters mixed with scenes that cannot exist in reality.
PARTING WITH THE SURREALISTS • In 1934 was put on trial by the Surrealist for being apolitical and appearing to focus on the commercial gain. • Dali was expelled from the group in 1939. Remaining artists in the Surrealist group were unhappy with his self-promotion, support of Franco after the Spanish civil war and interest in the rise of Hitler. • Dali and his wife spent must of the 1940 s in the US fleeing WWII. • During this time he collaborated with Alfred Hitchcock for dream-like sequences in the movie Spellbound. • He also was hired by Walt Disney to complete art for the film Destino.
THE ELEPHANTS 1948 Oil on Canvas Elephants reappear often in Dali’s work. These elephants on skinny legs carrying floating obelisks appear to be inspired by a Bernini sculpture in Rome. The scale and juxtaposition is a good example of his Surrealist work.
