WHAT IS SALSA? • Salsa is a Latin dance associated with the music genre of the same name which originated in the 1960 s in New York City. Salsa is an amalgamation of Cuban dances that were popular in the ballrooms and nightclubs of Havana by the end of the 1950 s (e. g. "casino", mambo and pachanga), as well as American jazz dances. • The name of the dance is very fitting – SALSA – which is Spanish for “sauce” that connotes a spicy mix. The name itself, while Hispanic in its etymology, was coined right in the United States, in New York specifically, where there was a great influx of Hispanic immigrants in the 30 s and 40 s.
WHO CREATED SALSA DANCE? Salsa originated in the 1900 s in Cuba, where rhythms from the two main existing styles of music in the region (Cuban Son and Afro-Cuban rumba) were combined to create a new dance. This new rhythm was combined with American jazz and taken to New York by Cuban musicians.
HOW MANY TYPES OF SALSA DANCE ARE THERE? • There are mainly 2 Salsa styles which are danced around the world: • The Cuban style (also known as Casino) - The couple is gearing around each other, there is not a fixed line. • The Los Angeles (L. A) style (In line style) - The couple is staying on an imaginary straight line (very convenient for shows). Also, sometimes called Puerto Rican style (true or not)
IS SALSA DANCING HARD TO LEARN? Learning salsa does not have to be difficult. It is made up of really simple steps that eventually turn into simple patterns that eventually turn into jawdropping moves. It is entirely up to you how difficult you want to make it. The key, once again, is to keep it as simple as you can. In general, I personally believe everybody who knows how to walk knows how to dance – just look at babies! We are born to dance!
WHY IS SALSA DANCING GOOD FOR YOU? • Salsa is a great form of exercise • Salsa dancing is a unique form of exercise because it provides the heart-healthy benefits of an aerobic exercise while also allowing you to engage in a social activity. • It helps with weight loss – did you know Salsa Dancing on average burns off 420 + calories per hour?
