BACKGROUND × Sally Mann was born in Lexington, Virginia. × She was born May 1, 1951 × She still lives and works there today. × She is the youngest child of three. × Her father was a Doctor and he is the one who inspired her to be a photographer.
EDUCATION × Sally Mann took her first photography class at The Putney School. She graduated from The Putney School in 1969. × Mann attended both Bennington College and Friends World College. In 1974 and 1975 she earned her B. A. (Bachelor of Arts) and an M. F. A. (A Master of Fine Arts) in creative writing.
STARTING OUT × Sally Mann first solo exhibition was in 1977 and it featured images of the construction of the new law library at Washington and Lee University where she had a job as a staff photographer. × She incorporated her these photos into her first book “Second Sight” published in 1984.
BOOKS • Hold Still: A Memoir with Photographs- Mann's preoccupation with family, race, mortality, and the storied landscape of the American South are revealed as almost genetically predetermined, written into her DNA by the family history that precedes her. (Published May 12, 2015)
BOOKS × Deep South- The photographs in Deep South, many produced with the nineteenthcentury collodion process and a variety of toning techniques, capture what Sally Mann calls the "radical light of the American South. (Published September 28, 2005) × This is the first book devoted to her landscape photography.
TECHNIQUE • Sally man used her children as the models in her photography. Sally likes to capture natural body, mortality and decay in her work. Mann's book and exhibition, "The Flesh and the Spirit, exemplifies this.
