Oxford History • Oxford Design Team – Oxford, England – Plug-in development from large scale digital console design experience
Oxford History • Oxford Team / Original SSL team • Passionate British console designers • Digital console to equal analog consoles plus more • UNIX based operating system • No lookup tables, on the fly calculations • Breakthrough converter design • Multiple dynamics & EQ types • Oxford design tools
Oxford Plug-ins • Oxford Plug-ins are based on the Equalizer, Dynamics, and Envelope Modulator sections and functions of the Oxford OXF -R 3 Digital Console
Oxford ‘Philosophy’… • “Where quality of sound and function comes first, closely followed by operational ease…”
Oxford Plug-in News • Transmod Plug-in ! • Pro Tools LE Plug-ins ! • Support for Pro Tools HD | ACCEL ! • Bundles include 3 products (EQ, Dynamics and Inflator) for LE and Power. Core
Oxford Plug-in News • All plug-ins for Pro Tools use i. Lok • All Power. Core plug-ins use Power. Core encryption • All existing products can be ‘versioned up’ to support this change
Oxford Plug-ins What makes it sound better? • Underlying Technology – Benefits - Double precision processing • 48 Bit processing yields 32 bit resolution • Common single precision plug-ins limited to 24 bit internal resolution • Low signal path noise and distortion, below -130 d. Br
Oxford Plug-ins What makes it sound better? Double precision math reduces mathematical error. Single precision math is like entering checks in your checkbook without writing down ‘pennies’. Error will build up over time, as does audio, as it goes through the various bands of the EQ, (i. e. building up errors along the way…) (see plots of competitive single precision EQ’s vs. Oxford’s Double precision EQ on next page…)
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer – Many know the Oxford plug-in EQ sounds great… - Here’s Why! Purple: Sony Oxford plug-in operating at max EQ gain @ center freq. Blue: Competitive plug-in operating at max EQ gain @ center freq. Green: Competitive plug-in operating at max EQ gain @ center freq. • Signals below -80 d. B go silent resulting in harmonic distortion Input vs. Output Linearity i. e. “It does what we say it does on the box…”
Oxford Plug-ins • Underlying Technology – No look-up tables, yielding extreme control resolution. – Most Analog controls are fully variable. Most Digital controls use “look-up” tables, with specific available values determined by software designer. – Oxford Plug-ins use “on the fly calculation” of knob values (“real time coefficient generation”), allowing user to achieve settings that they want. – This yields a “professional tool”. – (click on knob and drag cursor to side of screen, making large arc for control, giving extreme knob resolution)
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer – Features 5 -band parametric EQ • HF & LF bands selectable to shelf - Plus separate HF & LF filters • Includes variable slope, up to 36 d. B/Octave slope - 4 selectable EQ types • With alternative gain/Q dependency - - Support for sample rates up to 192 k. Hz
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer – Features (cont. ) GML EQ (for Pro Tools TDM only) • Adds accurate GML 8200 emulation • Hi Freq. Section goes to 26 k. Hz • GML EQ version also includes the 4 selectable Oxford EQ types from the standard EQ (Total of 5 EQ types!) - Flexible config’s – allows optimal DSP usage (TDM/Power. B values Select frequency in 1 Hz increments Linear or Rotary knob control Momentary or constant display knob values - Double precision processing • 48 bit processing yields 32 bit resolution • Single precision plug-ins limited to 24 bit internal resolution -
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer – Type 1 “Reciprocal” or “Symmetrical” – Minimal EQ/gain dependency – Resembles EQ from a very popular large console – (starts with an “S”)
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer – – – Type 2 ”selective cut” Boost same as Type 1 Cut has constant Q Resembles outboard specialty legacy unit Cut can have extremely narrow Q. Can be used for controlling drum resonances, removing feedback from live recordings or even slight open headphone feedback in vocal studio recording.
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer – – Type 3 “British EQ” Moderate gain/Q dependency Q reduces with gain Resembles EQ from another very popular large console – starts with an “N”
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer – – – Type 4 “Constant Power” Higher gain/Q dependency Ideal for mastering Area under curve stays the same Extremely wide Q allows for subtle control of midrange, instead of using hi and low bands in shelf mode
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer De-Cramping Algorithm • Oxford EQ’s Hi Freq. Section responds and sounds like an Analog EQ… Yellow : Oxford plug-in Red : Competitive plug-in showing nonsymmetrical and reduced HF content • HF response cramping: Increase in the steepness of the EQ curve at upper most part of the response • Unique Sony-Oxford software coefficient generation technique offers analog like performance HF response cramping at ½ Nyquist frequency
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer Overshoot-Undershoot Overshoot and Undershoot emulation of analog EQ’s Low Frequency and High Frequency sections (when in Shelf mode) use “Q” control to adjust overshoot and undershoot amount Yields characteristics of popular hardware EQ’s HF response cramping at ½ Nyquist frequency
Oxford Plug-ins • Equalizer - Recap – Benefits - Double Precision No look-up tables, including extreme control resolution 4 EQ types (5 with GML option) De-Cramping Algorithm (to emulate analog EQ’s) Overshoot and Undershoot capability (to emulate analog EQ’s)
Oxford Plug-ins • Dynamics – Features - Channel dynamics: • Compressor, Limiter, Expander, Gate • Selectable linear and exponential time constant curves • 2 band side-chain EQ (can also be used in signal path) • Soft ratio function (adjustable knee control) • Gain make-up for compressor • Selectable re-dithering function • Mono & Stereo versions
Oxford Plug-ins • Dynamics – Features - “Warmth” Function • Adds additional loudness, punch and definition • Imposes a harmonic profile that increases the density of higher value samples • Adds subtle warmth that is reminiscent of tube systems • Reduced control version of Inflator
Oxford Plug-ins • Dynamics Features - Multi-channel bus compressor/limiter: • 6 channel Surround multi-format support • Selectable sub-channel filtering and gain contribution control • Gain make-up for compressor • Identical to channel dynamics, (expander & gate removed) • (not available on LE version)
Oxford Plug-ins • Dynamics – Benefits - 3 compressor types • Offers 3 products for the price of 1 - No look up tables • Interpolated control values • Outstanding dynamics control resolution
Oxford Plug-ins • Dynamics – Benefits - Double precision processing • 48 Bit processing yields 32 bit resolution • Common single precision plug-ins limited to 24 bit internal resolution • Low signal path noise and distortion, below -130 d. Br
Oxford Plug-ins • Dynamics – The 3 Compressor types - Normal type (type 1) • Time constants: Exponential d. B timing • Constant time to complete compression event • Ideal for compressing entire program
Oxford Plug-ins • Dynamics – The 3 Compressor types - Classic type (type 2) • Time constants: Exponential d. B timing • Subset of Normal type / 3 knob control • Control interaction resembles popular legacy unit • Quick set-up, familiar control characteristics
Oxford Plug-ins • Dynamics – The 3 Compressor types - Linear type (type 3) • Time constants: Linear d. B timing • Level dependent time to complete compression event • Typically used as an effect
Oxford Plug-ins • Inflator – Features - Input and output level controls - Input and output metering - Band-split mode for multi-band processing • 3 independently processed bands (LF, MF and HF) - Controls for amount of effect and curve - “Curve” adds “predictive bending” of the audio - Includes input limiter function
Oxford Plug-ins • Inflator – Benefits - Increases loudness of almost any program • Increases level - regardless of prior compression • Without obvious loss in quality • Without audible reduction in dynamic range - Provides virtual headroom above digital maximum - Brings presence and warmth to program material - Processing performed in real-time
Oxford Plug-ins • Inflator – Creates warmth, character and dynamic excitement, similar to that of analog systems – Creates artistic effects ranging from subtle tube like harmonic characteristics for warmth, presence and ‘fatness’
Oxford Plug-ins • Inflator – No matter how limited, compressed and crushed your program may already be, the Inflator will provide even more loudness, and will even add musicality to previously clipped signals! – The Inflator is unique in that there are not any directly competitive products using similar algorithms
Oxford Plug-ins • Inflator – It is important to understand that the process is not any type of compressor/limiter, and that it works in real time without the involvement of time constants. – This means that there is absolutely no chance of level suck-outs or pumping effects
Oxford Plug-ins • Inflator Reviews • Audio Media May 2003 “Mastering Houses should be foaming at the mouth to get this baby. It does exactly what it says on the box, and everything I put through it came out louder and stronger, while the PPM’s remained about the same…”
Oxford Plug-ins • Inflator Reviews • Audio Media May 2003 (cont. ) – “The signals kept whatever purity and color they possessed prior to the process and there was no perceived extra limiting or compression added. ” – “On individual sounds it also works its magic, particularly on vocals and acoustic instruments as they seem to sit better in an overall mix. ”
Oxford Plug-ins • Inflator User Quotes “I downloaded the Inflator demo – this thing is a beast. It has already paid for itself (once my client heard this thing he asked me to run all his previously mastered tracks through it all over again…)”.
Oxford Plug-ins • Transient Modulator – The effect is to bring transient events in the program forwards, or push them into the background, such that the attacks of instruments can be accentuated or softened, depending on the settings.
Oxford Plug-ins • Transient Modulator – Features - “Transmod” allows dynamic level of signals to be modified by the transients in the program material over time - Increases overall modulation potential by the reduction of very short peaks - Adaptive processing acts on differential information in program material by looking ahead
Oxford Plug-ins • Transient Modulator – Benefits - Radically changes the dynamics of instruments Accentuates or flattens attacks and transients Increases or reduces the effects of ambience Produces rounded and dynamic percussive effects Increases overall modulation by reduction of very short peaks ‘Hardens up’ and gives life to ‘dull’ or ‘flat’ sounding recordings without the unwanted changes in overall timbre associated with multi-band compression techniques
Oxford Plug-ins • “Transmod” – “…developed to address the common situation where there is a need to selectively tighten up percussive instruments or soften the unwanted percussive effect of acoustic musical instruments”
