Family Background • Saint Kateri Tekakwitha was born 1656, Ossernenon, New Netherland, which is present day Auriesville, New York. • She was born into a Native American family. Her father was Kennerwronka, a Mohawk chief and her mother, Tagaskouita, an Algonquin woman.
Family Background • Her family died from the Smallpox epidemic. • Saint Kateri Tekakwitha, contracted the disease, she managed to survive but she had scars all over her face and she became impaired. She always hid her face with a blanket or a piece of cloth because of her scars. • When her family died, she was under the care of her uncle, who was the chief of the Mohawk clan. Her uncle didn’t approve Christianity. • When she was about 9 years old, she moved in with a foster family, but she was forced to marry due to Native American customs, but she wanted to remain single and dedicate her life to God.
Banished • She began to preach secretly to people in her village. • When people found out she was tortured, punished, and banished from the village. • . She fled to a missionary in Canada and there she was known as “Lily of the Mohawks. ”
Christianity • She dedicated her life to God by praying, being kind to others, and preaching. In 16777, on Christmas Day, she received the body of Christ. • She was devoted to Mary and vowed to remain as virgin and she went to mass twice a day. She cared for the young children and took care of the elderly and the sick.
Death and Legacy • On April 17, 1680 due to illness. Some people said that when she died her scars from smallpox disappeared and she had perfect skin. • On October 21, 2012, she was canonized a saint by Pope Benedict the XVI. • Saint Kateri Tekakwitha is that patron saint of the environment, ecology, people of nature, and those who grieve the death of parents. • She is the first Native American Saint in the United States and Canada.
