SIMCAT-SAGIS Development SEPA involvement starts SIMCAT (Early/Mid 1980’s - Present) • • Methodology for a risk based approach to understanding relative sources of pollution (2008 – 2010) Chemical Source Apportionment under the Water Framework Directive (2010 – 2012) WFD Requirements for Lakes, Transitional and Coastal Waters: Source Apportionment (2011 – 2013) Extending and updating UKWIR’s pollution source apportionment tool (2013 – 2017) Extending and updating UKWIR’s pollution source apportionment tool (2017 – 2018) Scottish Water has invested via UKWIR subscriptions Scottish Government has invested into original model build SEPA has invested into all UKWIR projects & additional development Total combined investment by Scotland Plc > £ 2, 000

SAGIS Overview • SAGIS Modelling Framework • Known Point sources • Diffuse sources from co-efficient database • Uses SIMCAT engine • Generates Source Apportionment Outputs • Used within SEPA for (among others) • Regulation of discharges • RBMP planning & implementation • Catchment investigations

Known Points are Mapped • • • Discharges Water Quality Monitoring Flow Gauging

What Can SAGIS Be Used For? Yes • • No Whole catchment analysis Intra-catchment

What Can SAGIS Be Used For? Yes • • No Whole catchment analysis Intra-catchment prioritisation Long term performance assessments Scenario analysis • Growth • Climate Change • Point Source Performance • Diffuse scenario impact • • • Wet weather event analyses Short-term impact assessments Impacts from non-modelled sectors Can also feed into: • Catchment scale, sewage work optimisation (Decision Support System) At present the tool holds: • • A single ‘current understanding’ run of each catchment x multiple pollutants The majority of these runs are outdated SEPA currently is working on updates for 70 catchments, these will replace existing runs. Additional scenarios can be added in due course – resource required to run them.
