Definitions � Compliance = “Here’s the rule, do it!” � Behavior = “Here’s the rule; why should you do it? ”
What are we doing? � Current safety program = Safety Director, Line Crew, SAP, RESAP, MECA � Safety Accountability = Following safety manual, OSHA/NESC rules, “not getting hurt” � Measuring Safety Statistics � Current best practice = Doing the necessary things because they are necessary.
What could we be doing? � Safety program = managed in the same manner and with the same importance as production and quality/profit. � Safety accountability = Clearly defined safety expectations at all organizational levels and defined tasks for each participant. � Measuring Safety Statistics = “Measuring something that you didn’t want to have happen. ”
What could we be doing? � Specific Best Practice = Clear alignment of safety expectations from the CEO to the lowest levels of the organization. “I’m in charge of safety!!”
Current state � Safety meetings- 8 per year with MECA, 4 per year with in-house instructors or local instructors like Marcus Daly Hospital. � Outside employees attend every meeting. � Inside employees attend select meetings. � Safety Director picks MECA topics and solicits help from others to set up other training.
Desired State � Safety Meetings-Outside crew rotates “ownership” of MECA meetings to include: setting up refreshments, picking topics, keeping minutes, reading minutes, etc. � Inside crew- Same “ownership” aspect except meet every other month or quarterly.
Current State � Safety Committee- Meet quarterly, sort of, and discuss topics on the agenda. Show interest in safety and attend some safety meetings. Keep minutes of meetings.
Desired State � Safety Committee- Engaged. Meet quarterly and more often if warranted. Share minutes of the meetings with employees. Question from Bud Branham, “How can a person be an active member of an effective safety committee if they won’t or don’t attend safety meetings? ” � Safety Committee should consider attending all meetings to allow for interaction with employees and reception of safety suggestions.
