Question to think about? • Motor vehicle injuries are the leading cause of death among people your age. What are some other ways you can think of that people can be injured?
Water Safety • • Never Swim Alone Swim only where there is a lifeguard Know your swimming ability Never dive into a pool, lake or other body of water without checking the depth first
Fire Safety • • Don’t leave a fireplace or candles burning when you're not around Don’t overload power strips or outlets Be carful when cooking Keep flammable materials such as curtains away from space heaters Install smoke alarms, and test them often Know how to operate a fire extinguisher Have a fire escape plan and practice it If there’s a fire get outside. Call 911 from outside the home. Never go back into a burning building.
Recreation Safety • Wear the proper safety gear for your activity or sport • Always wear a helmet when riding a bicycle, skateboard, scooter or inline skates • Look out for hazards or other risks. • Learn the proper skills for your activity • Stop if you feel pain or if something starts to hurt. Treat any injuries right away. • Obey traffic laws when riding a bike or other wheeled equipment
Pedestrian Safety • Always try to walk on paths or sidewalks. • Cross at a crosswalk. If there isn’t a crosswalk, cross at a corner if possible • Look both ways before and while crossing the street • Dress in bright colors or wear something reflective so drivers can easily see you • Carry a flashlight when walking at night. • Never play in or run into the road.
Firearms Safety • • Always keep any firearms in the home locked up Store ammunition away from the firearm Don’t touch a firearm without an adult helping you If you see a gun, don’t touch it. Tell an adult
Falls Safety • Watch out for hazards outdoors, such as rocks and uneven sidewalks or ground. • Watch for hazards at home, such as folded carpets and electric cords on the floor • Hold onto handrails when going up or down stairs • Don’t climb on buildings, rocks or other large objects • Use a flashlight when walking outdoors at night • Wear the right shoes for the activities you do.
Severe Weather Safety • Dress to protect your body from cold, wind, sun and other conditions • Stay indoors or seek shelter • Watch for falling trees and electrical wires after a storm • Follow safety procedures during natural disasters such as earth quakes or tornadoes. • Avoid low places that could flood • Prepare for weather events by having supplies on hand
