Safety is EVERYONE’s responsibility
Before You Leave the Dock All boats must have non-blinking lights n Red/Green Light for the bow n White light for the stern n All coaches must wear a life vest n All launches must have a Kippy Bag, a paddle, and a megaphone n Check oarlocks, riggers, seats, etc… to avoid repairs on the water n
Launching and Landing n n n Always launch and land in the DOWNSTREAM direction (Bow ball facing the Pennsylvania Ave Bridge) Minimize your time on the dock Store sweep oars up by the blacktop/fence area Scullers may leave oars parallel to the land edge of the dock while moving the scull to and from the water Do not leave your shoes on the dock Help each other out…. catch a boat if you see one landing
11 th Street Bridge n n n Always paddle, single-file through the bridge and for 100 m on either side Available arches will change regularly and possibly during your row Be alert for moving barges and approaching crews Do not turn within 100 m of an abutment When passing through an arch, stay as far right (starboard) as possible You may have two-way traffic in one arch if no other arches are available
Do NOT row under a crane. No Exceptions!
11 th Street Bridge Return to the normal river traffic pattern as soon as safely possible upon exiting the arch n Rowers should not address construction crew n Coxswains and coaches should only address construction crew if there is an immediate danger n If there is an issue with the construction crew, please notify Rich Fitzgerald, Jen Ney, or Mark Mandel n

Narnia Be Alert!! Many crews practice upriver out of the Blandensburg boathouse. n Not advisable to take big boats upriver above the railroad bridge n River is narrow and shallow making turns difficult n Well charged lights are a MUST! There is little to no reflective light above the railroad bridge. n Wear reflective and light colored clothing n

10 TIPS FOR ROWERS WHO FIND THEMSELVES IN THE COXSWAIN SEAT
1) Know the Anacostia River’s traffic pattern and proper arch usage. Stay out of the middle of the river. 2) Check the power on your cox box and test it with the mic before taking the boat off of the rack. 3) Always bring a whistle lanyard with attached tools and a glow stick. 4) If it’s dark or will fade to dark when you are rowing, turn the boat lights on before leaving the dock. 5) Know which direction you are going for practice and establish a place to wait and meet and your coach.
6) TURNING THE BOAT: Hold the rudder line with both hands Right hand turn = Right hand moves forward Left hand turn = Left hand moves forward Turn adjustments should be very slight Dramatic use of the rudder line leads to poor steering 7) STEER FIRST, TALK SECOND: Safe steering is of the utmost importance. Once you are successful with your steering, then you may talk to and encourage your crew. 8) HEAD UP - EYES FORWARD - EARS OPEN. Always be on the look-out for other boat traffic. Don’t forget to look behind you. Ask your stroke or bow seat to alert you to boat traffic approaching from behind your vessel.
9) Communicating to your Crew: Be clear. Speak firmly. Confirm the crew can hear you and are ready to execute your command. 10) If you don’t know what to do, ASK! Always put the safety of your crew and boat first. Have Fun & Be Safe!!

Around the Boathouse Help keep the docks clean n First Aid Kit is located in the common room n Keep the area in front of the cages clear n Fire extinguishers located throughout both tents n Park in the spaces as marked in the parking lot n If the lot is full, park outside of the gate n
Securing the Compound n n n Keep your valuables locked in your car Turn off all lights, fans and/or heat lamps Lock the Cage and the Gas Locker Lock all DOORS, BAYS, and GATES when leaving If suspicious persons or activity is occurring on the premises, call 911 for assistance
