Why do Accidents Happen? Accidents happen for one of the following reasons: * Unsafe Acts * Unsafe Conditions
Unsafe Acts are the actions by people that directly cause or contribute to an accident. • • • Taking shortcuts-not following procedures Using damaged or defective equipment Not using proper PPE Use of drugs or alcohol Horsesplay or running on a jobsite
Unsafe Conditions are non-actions by people. Not recognizing hazards or conditions that directly cause or contribute to an accident. • • • Damaged or Improper Equipment Lack of proper PPE Missing Machine/Equipment Guards Slippery Floors or Surfaces Poor Housekeeping/Debris
Controls Prevent Accidents There are 3 basic types of controls we use to prevent accidents: • Engineering Controls • Administrative Controls • Training Controls

Administrative Controls • • Hazard identification and analysis Identifying PPE needs Specific safety procedure Proper storage of materials & equipment • Controlled access to hazardous areas • Regular & competent supervision
