Safety: Eye Protection -Safety glasses are required. -Hot scale and chips burn! Safety glasses with side shields are encouraged. -Prolonged exposure to intense light can create long term vision damage. Do not stare directly into a forge unless needed. -Some safety glasses can provide UV filters for added protection.

Safety: Clothing -Do NOT wear synthetic clothing! -Loose fitting, cotton clothes are recommended. Ensure that articles of clothing overlap. For example, your pants should overlap the tops of your shoes to prevent hot work from falling into your shoe. -High top, steel toe boots are recommended. -A leather apron is strongly recommended. -Gloves are not necessary. But if used, leather gloves are best.

Hot iron does not start to glow until 900 F. -Always use tongs to pick up or move an object being worked on. -Hover your hand over an object to feel for radiating heat. -Drip water on an object to see if it boils or evaporates quickly. -Never grab an object directly. Softly touch the object and then pick it up.
