From Committees to Leaders • To align with this years Global Road Safety Week theme the Road Safety Youth Committees will now be the Road Safety Youth Leaders.
Program Overview • The program will be executed in two parts. The first will be an educational session where students will participate in different activities highlighting the risks of distracted walking. • The second component of the program will be the Road Safety Youth Leaders video contest. Students will create a 30 – 45 second video answering the question, “How would you tell your friends to be safe when crossing the street”?

Coalition Guide • Includes an complete overview of the both components of the program. • Step-by-step instructions for the two activities. • Program Timeline
Safety Lesson Plan • Pedestrian Safety Lesson Plan • The lesson plan teaches students about traffic, dangers that are present in walking environments, crossing the street, etc.
Student Pre/Post-Test • Short test to be given to students before and after the activities.
Student & School Handouts • Handouts to be given to school administrators and students explaining the video contest and the rules.

Student Evaluation • Student Activity Evaluation • Program evaluations for the students.
Activity Overview: Backwards Relay • Purpose: Create an obstacle course for students to complete that demonstrates what it would feel like to be texting while walking.
Activity Overview: Extra Loud Telephone • Purpose: Demonstrate to the students how having their headphones in or being distracted by other things while crossing the street is dangerous.
Post Activity Discussion • After each activity, have an open discussion with the students. Ask them what if anything was difficult about the activity and how these activities compare to walking and crossing the street while distracted.
Video Contest • Student will answer the question: "How would you tell your friends to be safe when crossing the street? ”.
Global Road Safety Week
Program Timeline • • • February – March 2019 – Secure a middle school and hold at least one educational session with students. February – April 2019 – Advertise and implement the contest with your selected middle school. • Provide the students with the Student Handout and pedestrian safety education to include in their 30 – 45 second video. • Be sure the students know how and where to submit their submission to you for judging. • Be sure the students know all the conditions of the contest and timeline. April 12, 2019 – Deadline for coalitions to submit videos to Safe Kids Worldwide through Wishpond for voting. April 15 - 26, 2019 – Voting period is open. May 6, 2019 – Grand prize winner announced. May 31, 2019 – Complete the online program evaluation.
