SAF DRIVES AND AUTOMATION SAF Drive Systems is internationally renowned as a specialist in drive systems and motor control, and for good reason. SAF offers custom, state-of-the-art solutions to drive challenges, large and small. SAF can offer anything from “off the shelf” standard products, to custom panel build-ups, to complete turn-key systems.

SOFT STARTERS Starting a AC Induction motor can be a stressful experience for both

SOFT STARTERS Starting a AC Induction motor can be a stressful experience for both the user’s power distribution system as well as the mechanical system that is being powered by the motor. Typical symptoms of “across the line” starting can include: • dimming of lights • wear on belts, couplings, motors • damage to end products • tripping of overload protection

SOFT STARTERS To combat these problems, Reduced Voltage Soft Starters were developed. Solid State

SOFT STARTERS To combat these problems, Reduced Voltage Soft Starters were developed. Solid State Reduced Voltage Soft Starters use power semiconductors called silicon controlled rectifiers (SCR) that block voltage in both directions in the “off” stage and conduct voltage in one direction only in the “on” state. By using a Current Controlled (Closed Loop) Soft Starter, we can achieve a much smoother starting action because current is directly proportional to torque, thus eliminating many problems associated with using almost any other method of starting AC motors.

Soft Starter or VFD? n n Soft Starters are usually current or voltage controlled, not frequency. Soft Starters do not have the ability to control speed. Soft Starters will have significant price benefits. Soft Starters will have a smaller footprint on larger HP application.

SAF SOFT STARTERS Since 1976, SAF has developed Soft Starters that span over three generations of technology. The dependable SR 6 analog unit, the compact versatile OPAL SS 6, and the NEW microprocessor-based OPAL Pro digital version. Even as our products evolve, we have ensured to maintain the qualities that have made every generation of SAF’s Soft Starters a success: Reliability, Ruggedness and Simplicity.

SAF SOFT STARTERS SAF’s OPAL series was built on the concept that our customers wanted a reliable starter that was simple to use and had the flexibility to match any application. These ideas were kept in mind when our customers requested that we develop a new digital starter.
