SAAIR EXCO NOMINATIONS 2018 -2020
Dr Elizabeth Archer University of the Western Cape Liz Archer is a qualified Educational Psychologist with a Ph. D in Assessment and Quality Assurance. She started her career in academia as a researcher and project coordinator at the Centre for Evaluation and Assessment at the University of Pretoria. From 2011 -2017 Liz was employed at the University of South Africa as a Specialist in Institutional Research. Currently, she is the Director of Institutional Research at the University of the Western Cape. Liz is also an Extraordinary Lecturer in the School of Health Sciences and Public Health, Faculty of Health Sciences at the University of Pretoria (2017 - 2019). She has spent 18 years in training and consulting in education and research, particularly Computer-Aided Qualitative Data Analysis. She is a well-published author and a rated researcher with the South African National Research Foundation (NRF). She has authored over 30 published, peer-reviewed articles and chapters, attracting over 370 citations. She has been the recipient of many prestigious scholarships, including the South African Netherlands Research Programme on Alternatives in Development (SANPAD); Advanced Research Capacity Initiative; National Research Foundation and the SKYE fellowship. She is an active supervisor with multiple Doctoral and Masters students under her guidance. She an Associate Editor for the journal, Frontiers in Quantitative Psychology and Measurement. She regularly reviews articles for national and international journals including International Review of Research in Open and Distributed Learning, South African Journal of Education, South African Journal of Higher Education, Perspectives in Education, African Journal for Research in Mathematics Science and Technology Education, Progressio and School Effectiveness and School Improvement. She has also presented conferences and guest lectures all over the world in countries such as New Zealand, Portugal, Malaysia, Canada, Ethiopia, Ghana, Mauritius, Austria, the Netherlands and Zimbabwe. Glen Barnes IDSC Consulting • Current role – Chief Executive Officer IDSC Consulting • Responsibilities – Servicing 21 Higher Education Institutions in the area of MI, BI, analytics and decision modelling through the HEDA system • Extensive experience in Systems and Web Development, including the implementation of comprehensive decision support and business intelligence systems for the purposes of institutional planning and decision making, mainly in higher education • Past President of SAAIR and currently serves on the Exco of the association • He has presented a number of papers at international and local conferences in the area of decision support, business intelligence and computer modelling. He has also been part of specialized task teams looking at the implementation of BI and MI functions within higher education institutions

Dr Angelo Fynn Unisa Angelo Fynn is a Specialist Institutional Researcher in the Institutional Research Directorate at the University of South Africa. His research interests include student success at South African HEI’s; the application of learning analytics within the South African context; Educational Neuroscience; Critical psychology; and the ethics of using big data in the African context. Angelo served as the Deputy Chair for the Psychological Society of South Africa Division for Research and Methodology between 2015 and 2017. He was the manager of the Student Success Unit at the University of South Africa from 2014 to 2016 and headed several initiatives aimed at developing learning analytics systems within the Open Distance Learning context.
Juan-Claude Lemmens University of Pretoria • Head: Research and Innovation (Higher Education) at the Department for Education Innovation • His research interests include the assessment, profiling, and tracking of undergraduate students, especially first-year students • His research foci are in the areas of academic readiness, learning experience, engagement, retention and success • Contributed as Executive Committee member of SAAIR • Published several articles and chapters in books in the field • Contributed to professional development as organiser, presenter and facilitator
Emily Mabote Tshwane University of Technology Ms Emily Mabote is a deputy director in the Directorate of Quality Promotion (DQP) at Tshwane University of Technology. Her experience in quality in higher education spans for more 13 years. She is responsible for overseeing new and revised programme approval, accreditation and registration, professional bodies’ accreditation and internal and external reviews. In addition, she also has oversight responsibilities for stakeholder surveys, quality management system, quality promotion and capacity building, student quality literacy and the office of the students’ ombudsman. She is also responsible for the quality assurance of short courses and teaching and learning agreements. She represents the directorate in several academic committees at the university and she also serves in the institutional HEQSF task team. She is also a member of the institutional Combined Assurance forum. Externally, she serves in the HEQSF working group of South African Technology Network (SATN). She has also participated in several SAAIR activities. She holds a Master’s degree in Education and in 2017, she graduated from Rhodes University with the PGDip in Higher Education Studies: for Academic Developers (cum laude). She is currently pursuing a Doctoral degree at Rhodes University.
Innocent Mamvura University of the Witwatersrand “Your Vote will make a difference” Innocent Mamvura is a Data Scientist at the University of the Witwatersrand in Johannesburg, specializing in Artificial Intelligence and Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Data Warehousing, and Institutional research. He has been a member and contributor to the Southern African Association for Institutional Research (SAAIR) for the at least 8 years and his passion is to transform the Higher Education Sector through the use of data and emerging technologies. He strongly believes that with innovation and dedication we can achieve the SAAIR mandate of growing the association through promoting collaboration, training and development amongst institutional researchers across the continent.

Dr Mxolisi Masango University of the Witwatersrand Mxolisi Masango is the Head of the Analytics and Institutional Research (AIR) Unit at the University of the Witwatersrand (Wits). He holds a Ph. D degree from the University of Pretoria. Mxolisi started his career as a Researcher at the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), where he spent more than 10 years developing diagnostic assays for veterinary diseases in the field of toxicology. During this time, he led multiple research projects, secured several research grants and published numerous peer-reviewed articles in local and internal journals. After leaving the ARC, he joined Wits where he is currently involved in various institutional research activities as well as student success-focused projects. Mxolisi is the Project Leader of the Wits Siyaphumelela project, a Kresge Foundation funded project. In addition, Mxolisi has been an active member of SAAIR and has hosted, together with his unit, the 2018 SAAIR Learner Analytics Workshop.
Allison Mlitwa Stellenbosch University Allison Mlitwa is a research officer in the Division for Business Intelligence at Stellenbosch University. She sees her role in IR as helping users gain confidence in engaging with institutional data by making it more accessible. She believes that the democratisation of data can expedite decision-making and uncover opportunities. She enjoys seeing users grow in confidence in their use of institutional data. For her IR has a significant role to play in the transformation of higher education. Her vision for SAAIR is to strengthen our capacity to care by widening and strengthening our SAAIR community by including more voices as we seek to improve higher education. She is continually confronted by the question - if we are in the business of education, what is our bottom-line?
Naveena Moodley University of Kwa. Zulu-Natal I am currently employed as a Principal Information Analyst in the Institutional Intelligence section in the Institutional Planning & Governance directorate. I have been employed at UKZN for 18 years. I am responsible for the reporting of Staff, Space and Post-Doctoral HEMIS information. During my years at UKZN, I have also been involved in various other areas like Assets, Staff, systems specification and implementation, staff training, etc. More recently, I have become largely involved in planning in the university, viz. , The Enrolment plan, Annual performance Plans, Mid-Term Reports, etc. I enjoy assisting staff and students in the university with whatever I can. I also believe that we should not work with a silo mentality but within our institutions we should have a strategic way of working.
Lufuno Netshifhefhe University Of Venda Lufuno Netshifhefhe is the Head of Quality Assurance at the University of Venda. He has been in the higher education sector for 9 years. His responsibility as the Head Quality Assurance include among others Academic planning, Departmental Reviews, HEQSF, PQM etc. Lufuno Holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Economics, Post Graduate Diploma in Higher Education from Rhodes University and is currently busy with research on his Masters in Public Administration with Univen.
