A Great Explorer was Born Louis Joliet was born in 1645 and grew up in a French settlement near Quebec City. When he was eleven his mother remarried a successful merchant after his father died of a disease. Louis Joliet started life a fur trader, but longed to explore. Later on he went to a Jesuit school in Quebec.
Father Marquette Louis Joliet The Chosen Ones This is a map showing the route that Louis Joliet took to find the Mississippi Louis Joliet was sent by the French Governor of Quebec on a mission to determine where the Mississippi River was located and to where it led. The French Governor was hoping the river would either lead to the California Gulf or the Pacific Ocean. He was sent with a partner with the name of Father Marquette. Joliet was chosen because of his intelligence on waters around the area. Marquette was chosen because he was going to teach Christianity to the Indians that lived on the lands beside the Mississippi River.
Exploring the Land Fun Fact When Joliet and Marquette found the Mississippi River they met the Blackfoot Indians. They did not go around barefoot, like most Indians. They wore moccasins made of animal skin. Joliet and Marquette left on their mission on May 18 th, 1673 and found the Mississippi on June 17 th, 1673. They were led by many distinct rivers to the Mississippi. Joliet explored all areas around the Mississippi, even the rivers that led him. How Did He Do It? Joliet and Marquette traveled the whole way following all sorts of different rivers in birch bark canoes. They had many supplies in their canoe, such as rope, food, hunting supplies, etc. The supplies were very helpful and useful throughout their entire journey.
Afterword After Louis Joliet explored the area, he brought back supplies and evidence that he had seen and explored the river and that humans can benefit from it. What Happened Next? Louis Joliet was given the island Anticosti because of his great deeds and went there to live out the rest of his life in 1700 at the age of 54. He went to the island seemed to have disappeared. Nobody knows where he went. There was no evidence to where he died or how he died.
