Urban Development Urbanisation is a vital challenge for the GAA Ulster GAA focus over the next five years Derry City Urban GAA Project Belfast City Urban GAA Project (Upper Springfield Project Pilot)
National Urban Development Committee Twenty two targeted initiatives in each one of the key urban areas Provincial and County Urban committees Existing resources dedicated to this challenge
Urban Development 2008 2002 • Urban GAA Strategy Place with Project board • Six Urban Clubs (three rural clubs in the district) • All 9 Clubs no involved in the project (project board) • Four GAA pitches • One coach for the city (placement student) • Four more GAA pitches being developed with a new “shared” 3 G pitch • All clubs will have a home ground by mid 2010 • No GAA pitches • Full-Time GAA Urban Community Development Officer in Derry City Council (This post has secured £ 1. 8 million of public investment to GAA in the city) • No council provision or support • Five coaches (1 GPO and 4 Schools Coaches) • No summer camps or youth programmes • GAA high priority for the city council- Land leased to clubs for pitch development by Council with a total value of over £ 2 million • Low GAA provision • Over 1000 participants at annual summers camps • Three female teams • One female team • City wide development squad feeding into County squads
Urban Development Belfast Upper Springfield Project • Focused on Three Clubs (Years 1 and 2) Ulster’s Sleeping Giant • Focus will expand to North/West Belfast year 3 • Feeder Club Population 550, 000+ • Female participation Priority CDU • Linked to overall Belfastfor Strategy • Community Officer/Community Coach in place Belfast Rising, Strategy for the GAA in Ireland’s second city
