Assignment 1884 • 1884, Rwanda is assigned to Germany as part of German East Africa after the Berlin Conference. • At this time Tutsi chiefs maintained rule over Hutu who were the lower class
Government 1924 • Belgium is given Ruanda-Urundi by the League of Nations in 1924 for controlling its territory during World War 1. • Ruanda-Urundi is one territory that will soon separate and make Rwanda and Burundi.
Identification 1932 • Belgium introduces identity cards to distinguish between Hutu, Tutsi, and a sub culture of Twa who live in harmony compared to the other two. • Hutu made up 14% of the population while 85% were Tutsi. The Twa was merely 1% of the population.
“Independence” 1946 • Ruanda-Urundi gains independence and splits into two independent states, Rwanda and Burundi.
Uprising 1959 • Although the minority of the population were tutsis, they were given privileges and westernstyle education. • The Hutus rebelled against the Belgian colonial power and forced 150, 000 Tutsis to flee to Burundi.
Independence 1962 • The Hutu uprising ended the Tutsi domination and raised ethnic tensions in Rwanda. • The Belgian force withdrew and the republic was announced and the official lines between Rwanda and Burundi were drawn.
Massacre 1963 • Around 20, 000 Tutsis were killed in response to a military attack from exiled Tutsis from Burundi. • Due to this more of the Tutsi population were moving to Burundi.
RPF 1987 -1990 • The Rwandan Patriotic Front is formed in 1987 by Rwandan exiles living in Uganda made of Tutsis to retake control of Rwanda. • In 1990 the RPF begin to invade Rwanda with 7, 000 soldiers which puts Hutus on edge for hiding soldiers.
Outrage 1994 • The presidents of Burundi and Rwanda get shot down out of a plane killing everyone on board. • The genocide begins with Hutus finding every Tutsi in Rwanda and kill everyone including the children and use the women for rape. • About 1 million are killed with 150, 000 to 250, 000 women raped.
Trial 2000 • Almost 100, 000 genocide suspects await trial after the government tries to replace the murdered judicial system. • Anyone who wasn’t persecuted and trialed escaped to nearby countries including the Congo. • Multiple survivors still give their stories of the massacre that took place.
