What is a stroke? • A stroke is a brain attack. A stroke is what happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off. • Blood carries essential nutrients and oxygen to the brain. Without a blood supply, brain cells can be damaged or destroyed. • 2 types • clot, blockage occurs there or travels there • bleed in brain or space around the brain Stroke Helpline 0303 3033 100 stroke. org. uk

TIA or Mini Stroke • Transient ischaemic attack (TIA) is a warning sign of a future stroke – about one in four people who have had a TIA will go on to have a full stroke in future • 20, 000 mini strokes every year • Symptoms of TIAs are the same as stroke • TIA symptoms can last up to 24 hours, but will sometimes resolve within 5 to 20 minutes • It is important that you should dial 999 urgently if you, or someone you know, have any of the symptoms of a TIA Stroke Helpline 0303 3033 100 stroke. org. uk
