RUSSIAN ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS By Nicole and Lexie
ENGLISH LANGUAGE LEARNERS (ELL) ➤ An ELL is someone who is usually from a different country that is unable to communicate and adequately learn English. ➤ In Russia 5. 5% of Russia’s population speak English as a second language. Russia is lacking greatly in communication skills. There a lack of studies which focus on Russia’s specific characteristics of nonnative English teaching and learning Teachers who were observed demonstrated a distinct Russian accent when speaking English, which correlated with their foreign language competence and working experience The majority of Russian educational institutions have traditionally taught foreign languages through creating special artificial bilingual classroom environments The overwhelming majority of Russian students never directly contact native speakers of the foreign language they learn, throughout the entire course of study
1. STAGES ELLS GO THROUGH WHILE LEARNING ENGLISH Preproduction: learner has minimal understanding nods for yes and no points at object 2. Early Production: learner has limited understanding uses key words uses one or two word responses 3. Speech Emergence: learner has a good understanding can produce sentences makes errors in grammar and punctuation 4. Intermediate Fluency: learner has an excellent understanding makes few errors in grammar and punctuation 5. Advanced Fluency: learner is nearly as good as a native speaker
RUSSIAN CULTURE ➤ Very high value on family and the homeland ➤ Most families live with 2 or 3 generations in a little apartment ➤ Most families are small because the woman works outside of the house along with household and childrearing chores ➤ Russia is known for its literature, philosophy, classical music, ballet, architecture, painting, cinema and animation ➤ Languages spoken in Russia are Russian, Tatar and Ukrainian

5 STRATEGIES TO USE WHILE TEACHING ELLS 1. Phonemic Awareness: refers to the ability to identify and manipulate these phonemes in spoken words Phonemes combine to form syllables and words Ex: the word stop has four phonemes (s-t-o-p) while shop has three phonemes (sh-o-p) 2. Phonics: the understanding that there is a predictable relationship between phonemes and graphemes Phonemes-the sounds of spoken language Graphemes-the letters and spellings that represent those sounds in written language 3. Vocabulary Development: important for beginning reading in that when a student comes to a word and sounds it out, he/she is also determining if the word makes sense based on his/her understanding of the word
5 STRATEGIES TO USE WHILE TEACHING ELLS 4. Reading Fluency: fluency. CONTINUED is the ability to read words accurately and quickly 5. Reading Comprehension Strategies: the culmination of all of the reading skills and the ultimate goal of learning to read
3 STRATEGIES TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILIES OF ELLS 1. Show that you value families’ native languages Respect parents’ intentions and encourage native language use at home Native language skills contribute to ELLs academic success Ex: post information in multiple languages, discuss the value of being bilingual, inform parents they are allowed to bring their own interpreter to school meetings 2. Learn about your ELL population Learning about the specific population creates a foundation for everything you do at the school, it can help you match students with appropriate services
3 STRATEGIES TO BUILD RELATIONSHIPS WITH FAMILIES OF ELLS 3. Provide opportunities for parents to learn more about important topics or skills Educate families on the U. S. school system Give information on gifted programs, special education programs, parent -teacher conferences, standardized testing
HOW MIGHT THIS INFORMATION IMPACT YOUR TEACHING? ➤ This information will impact my teaching because knowing the background of your student is a key in helping them succeed. The more you know about your learner the easier it will be to help them throughout the school year. Knowing how to help your child in a way that is relatable to them will help them tremendously.
