Definition A run-on sentence is any sentence with two or more independent clauses that are joined without appropriate punctuation. It is important to discern that difference between an independent clause and a dependent clause to recognize a run on sentence.
What is an independent clause? An independent clause is a complete sentence that contains a subject, a verb, and is a cohesive thought. Ex. We watched a video in class today. Different from a dependent clause, which is just a subject and a verb, but not a complete thought. Dependent clauses can be the root of sentence fragments Ex. When we watched a video in class today
Coordinating Conjunctions are tools to combine multiple clauses in a sentence, be them independent or dependent. These conjunctions can be used in place of punctuations like ; !. And, but, for, nor, so, yet It was getting late, so I wanted to go home
Comma Splices Two independent clauses connected by only a comma constitute a runon sentence that is called a comma-splice. This is a small error of punctuation because the comma can often be replaced with a period or semi-colon for correct grammar. Eg. It is already three o’clock, we will be leaving soon.
