RUNDOWN TECHNIQUE AND DRILLS
WHAT CREATES A RUNDOWN? üBad baserunning from a baserunner or trail runner from a ground ball or fly ball üGood defensive decision by your cut person üDelay steal on your pitcher or catcher üPickoff attempt on 1 st, 2 nd or 3 rd üMissed squeeze at 3 rd üBad decision on passed ball or wild pitch ü 1 st or 3 rd steal attempts
TEAM SYSTEM FOR RUNDOWN: üTeam alert “ball up”, “rundown” üOutside/inside lanes created üAngle to runner if trapped away üTag with 1 or 2 hands üCall for “Ball” or “Now” or say nothing üGo all the way back to the base or cut it short üMove toward the ball as you call for it üNo crossing of lanes
SKILLS NEEDED FOR ü Dart throw. RUNDOWN: ü Running dart throw ü Glove up or glove down as you run
SKILLS NEEDED FOR RUNDOWN ü Receiving the dart throw as you pinch ü Receiving and returning of dart throw ü Receiving the dart throw and tag, one or two hands
DRILLS: ü Sprinting in a rundown position ü Sprinting and dart throwing ü Receiving and calling for the dart throw ü Trap away angle to runner as you commit her
TEAM DRILLS: Runners on each base, defensive players at their positions. Start rundown at a base and run the rundown
Same as last drill and start the rundown from a cut position
