Towards a ‘DNA of RRI’ - What we learned *RRI ≠ Science Engagement *No

Towards a ‘DNA of RRI’ - What we learned *RRI ≠ Science Engagement *No need to reinvent the wheel • • Reflect – Recognise RRI in current practice; Recognise gaps; Work to your strengths Adapt RRI to address specific challenges and build on existing foundations • Align RRI with organisational values, national imperatives & relevant SDGs • Strategise – actively build RRI into governance & strategic planning • Tell your story - illustrate RRI in practice (tell your story, tell your story) 7

Benefits for NRF and SA Local - RRI involves management structures across the NRF

Benefits for NRF and SA Local - RRI involves management structures across the NRF and government • • • SAASTA - H 2020 partnerships bring different NRF operational divisions together: e. g. Legal, International Relations, Finance; SAASTA Science Education & Communication NRF National Facility, SAIAB used as a case study for embedding RRI in a research Institute DSI White Paper on Science & Innovation and Science Engagement Strategy both include RRI among aims and objectives DSI/NRF Research Chairs in Science Communication NRF working groups establishing Frameworks for RRI and Engaged Research SAASTA’s role in science governance evolving – e. g. coordination of UNESCO Recommendations for Science and Scientific Researchers (RSSR) South African report – multi-organisational report including implementation of science engagement for the first time. Global - Networking through Science Engagement & RRI partnerships • • • China – Science festivals, science literacy and science engagement and communication Discussions about RRI in Beijing in 2013 resulted in NUCLEUS Project Network NUCLEUS Project enabled collaboration with the Australian Volunteer Network to provide a project placement NUCLEUS project created other networks – RRING and GRRIP which provided another project placement Membership of a growing global community of practice Covid-19 pandemic - global networking of science centres including South Africa, sub. Saharan Africa, Europe, USA, Middle East and Australasia to discuss the pandemic.
