Rounding to the nearest 100 When rounding a number to the nearest 10, we look at the ones column to decide whether we round it up or down. e. g. 43 rounded to the nearest 10 is 40 The ones column is 4 or below so we let it go (round it down) to the previous 10 which is 40. 47 rounded to the nearest 10 is 50 The ones column is 5 or above so we give it a shove (round it up) to the next ten which is 50 When we round to the nearest 100, the same rule applies but it is the tens column that determines whether we round it up or down. Try this: 134 rounded to the nearest hundred is 100 3 (30) is 4 or below so we round it down to the previous hundred
