What is Lesson Study? • Aims at teachers’ professional development • In Japan since 1870 • Currently spread throughout Asia, America and Europe

Synergies of Action Research and Lesson Study • Both approaches centre on cycles of inquiry • Both approaches seek to investigate practice, evaluate the situation and seek to improve it by building tacit knowledge • Reflective practice is at the heart of both approaches • Both approaches occur within the practitioners’ context and are adaptive to individual contexts • Collaborative and require peer feedback • Bridge theory practice divide
