Petrarchan nature of the balcony scene l l l Romeo asks her “What shall I swear by? ” and Juliet responds, “swear by thy gracious self / Which is the god of my idolatry” (2. 2. 113 -114). She changes her mind: Well, do not swear. Although I joy in thee, I have no joy of this contract tonight, It is too rash, too unadvis'd, too sudden. (2. 2. 116 -118) But eventually succombs to sonneteering tropes herself…
