This ultimately contributes to the play’s theme that haste often leads to poor decisions and potentially dangerous situations because, if one is to make wise choices, time is required to think things through. Although perhaps these iconic lovers are not entirely to blame for their eventual demise, they are certainly more complex and threedimensional characters than the simple star-crossed lovers alluded to in modern songs and works of fiction. The terrible “consequence hanging in the stars” for Romeo and his love is as much a result of character traits as it is of fate, but no less tragic for their own responsibility.
