ROMANTICISM, TRANSCENDENTALIS M, AND GOTHIC ROMANTICISM
Romanticism ◦ Began as a reaction against the Age of Reason (which focused on logic and science) ◦ Once the country and politics was established, writers wanted writing to focus less on politics and policy and more on what they found interesting. ◦ From 1800 -1860
Tenets ◦ Emotion ◦ Individuality ◦ Spirituality (personal connection with God, rather than a religious focus) ◦ Idealism (perfect idea of something rather than a realistic expectation or depiction) ◦ Inspiration in beauty and nature ◦ Imagination
Transcendentalism ◦ The idea that in determining the ultimate reality of God, the universe, the self, and other important matters, one must transcend(go beyond) everyday human experience in the physical world ◦ Overlapped with Romanticism
Main Beliefs ◦ There is a direct connection between the universe and the individual soul ◦ Follow your intuition and beliefs no matter how much they differ from the social norms ◦ All people are inherently good, society corrupts! ◦ There is an “over-soul” that connects all things in the world (humans with nature)
Gothic Romantic ◦ Same basic elements as Romanticism ◦ Also included ◦ Elements of the supernatural world (ghosts, monsters, etc. ) ◦ Sad ◦ Suspenseful ◦ Darkness and gloom ◦ Mystery ◦ Overly dramatic ◦ Terror/Fear
Gothic Characteristics ◦ Woman in danger/damsel in distress ◦ Supernatural occurrences ◦ Ambiguous hero ◦ Dungeons, tombs, castles ◦ Overly emotional ◦ Violent weather ◦ Big landscapes (large forests)
